Rounders, the 1998 cult classic that helped increase the popularity of poker in the early 2000s, made a return to the news this week. Could momentum again be building for a sequel?

Practically every single western movie that featured a poker scene had the main protagonists playing this variant of the game. What Matt Damon and John Malkovich did in Rounders was to bring the game to a wider non-poker playing public. Matt Damon tells the story of what happened when he filmed with John Malkovich in Rou. While the cult classic movie starring Matt Damon, Edward Norton and John Malkovich is widely recognized as the best and most influential poker movie of all time, there are many others out there, and most of them feature scenes with memorable poker hands. High stakes, large pots and bluffing are what makes these scenes so great.

First, it was reported that co-star Edward Norton will soon play in a private poker game and talk about the movie as part of a charitable endeavour. Someone paid $120,000 for the experience. And coincidentally, Matt Damon, who was the lead actor in the film, spoke with the BBC recently about how much fun filming the movie was for the cast.

Damon did a spot-on impersonation of John Malkovich, who, as everyone knows, played the infamous Teddy KGB. Damon also told the story of when Malkovich first appeared on set.

Apparently both Norton and Damon would be interested in doing a sequel, but it’s unclear if it will ever happen, as the project has been hinted at for years now without any significant progress, or at least progress that has been made public. Every now and then there’s a glimmer of hope.

Arguably the last promising thing that happened for those longing for a sequel was when Norton appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2014 and said a sequel was a “possibility.”

However, that was a major regress from the comments made by producer Harvey Weinstein in 2013. He said about a follow-up movie: “I’ve discussed making Rounders 2 with Matt Damon, and I would say [the movie] is going to be instantaneous.”

A script from Rounders writer Brian Koppelman reportedly has already been put together. While a sequel has been delayed indefinitely, Koppelman, along with David Levien, penned the script to the online poker film Runner Runner, which starred Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake.

The comment from Weinstein followed an interview in 2011 in which he said about the movie: “I never make sequels but it’s something I’d like to revisit.”

Obviously, the two stars of the film remember it fondly, so perhaps that is keeping the possibility alive for now. The sequel remains “in development” on IMDB.
